Chase online banking had been out from Monday evening, September 13, through early Wednesday, September 15. The down time marked one of the more protracted periods of online banking to go dark, and there has been no explanation offered for the online banking snag.
There have been plenty of websites, pro-Chase and anti-Chase, proffering users' notions of what went wrong, but the short story is this: there is just no know for certain what happened.
What is certain is that Chase issued an email apology to its online banking users on Saturday, September 18, wholly three days after the online services had been restored, permitting users to once again check balances, make money transfers, and make last-minute bill payments. Chase bank officials had reported earlier in the week there would be no interruption of scheduled payments.
The email reads as follows:
"We recently experienced a service interruption that affected the chase.com website and mobile services, and we apologize if this created any difficulties for you. We have resolved the problem, and want to assure you that your account information was not compromised as a result of this outage.
"We know that our customers rely upon the 24 hour access to their account information provided by Chase.com. This was not the level of service we know you expect, and we will work hard to better serve and communicate with you.
"Your accounts and confidential information remain secure and we want to remind you that Chase will never ask for your personal information or login credentials via email.
"Please accept our apology for any inconvenience this may have caused. We’re continuing to work hard to maintain your trust and confidence.
"We’re always here to assist you."
Bank of America suffered an interruption of its online banking service in January, but also offered no explanation of what transpired. BofA officials did go out of their way, at the time, to assuage concerns the downed service was the result of a security breach.
